Eskom experienced one of the worst weeks in recent memory as it suffered 45 breakdowns in the space of just seven days, decimating the power utility's ability to meet electricity demand, just as the first days of spring brought with it expected relief for the country's electricity shortage.

Warmer weather, in general, means a lower demand on electricity as less heaters and heating devices are used in homes.

As South Africa heads into warmer months, Eskom usually increases the number of generating units it takes offline for desperately needed maintenance after hard running over the winter.
